About the Journal

Journal of Onomastics (Namenkundliche Informationen, NI) is an international and interdisciplinary journal dedicated to onomastics. It publishes scholarly research articles, with a particular focus on the field's intersections with linguistics, literary studies, history, sociology, cultural studies, philosophy and geography. The journal welcomes studies of all categories of names, including personal names and toponyms.

Founded in 1964 by Germanists, Slavists and historians in Leipzig, the journal is now published on behalf of the Faculty of Philology of the University of Leipzig. It is the flagship publication of the Gesellschaft für Namenforschung e.V. (GfN), the Society for Name Research.

The Journal of Onomastics is published continuously online in gold open access. Each year's articles are additionally compiled in a print volume. Publication languages are German, English and French.

All submitted articles first undergo an editorial review by the editorial team and are then peer reviewed by recognized experts in the field. Both the reviewer and the contributor are anonymous (minimum of 2 reviews, double-blind procedure).

The journal is an open-access journal. All contributions are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) license and can be used freely under the terms of the license and can be used freely under the terms of the license. Users are entitled to read, download, copy, share, print, search, link to, or use the full texts of the articles for other lawful purposes without prior permission from the editors or authors. This complies with the Open Access definition of the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI).

No exclusive transfer of exploitation rights (Copyright Transfer) to the journal takes place. By submitting their manuscripts, the authors agree to publication under the Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license.

If institutional funding is provided (by a university, the DFG, the FWF, the SNF, or similar organizations), a publication fee (Article Processing Charges) of 200 euros will be charged per article.

Long-term archiving of the e-journal is secured by the hosting provider of the publication software, the Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library (SLUB), via SLUBArchiv.digital. This infrastructure serves as the digital long-term archive to preserve a copy of anything published in Saxony to which the library is mandated by state law.
